Kiri, a therapy dog, will visit CREC’s Discovery Academy on January 19 as part of a program that involves dogs in the reading process.

This academic year, the school is partnering with Tails of Joy, an organization that trains animals to provide therapeutic benefits in both medical and educational settings. Participating students are in grades one through four and were selected because of their perseverance and effort in reading.

On January 19, second-grade students will be working with Kiri. Members of the media are invited to attend the session.

Kiri, who visited CREC’s Discovery Academy for the first time in December, has gone through extensive training, and students will read with the dog in 15-minute increments. This reading time is expected to foster deeper motivation for students by allowing for an emotional connection between children and the dog. It also allows the school to offer non-traditional reading support for struggling students.
